Making Lemonade: Lessons from Making in 2020 (Panel Discussion)

  • Department of Design, The Ohio State University (map)

There has been an explosion of people making things during pandemic-driven isolation. Whether it is learning to cook and bake, upcycling goods to save money, developing craft projects to support home schooling endeavors, or simply focusing on hobby crafts that are meditative stress relievers or because they create implied connections to communities of other artists/designers doing similar things, the pandemic has shown a light on the ways that creativity and productivity serve to enhance the human experience. Join our creative panel as they share lessons learned from making.

  • Artist, writer, architect, and design researcher Hemu thought art was a ‘hobby’ until a couple of years ago. Now, these visual, artistic narratives (coupled with research rooted in the socio-cultural fabric of things) are her connections to her ‘glocal’ community and her own self. In a world of extreme polarization and isolation, she will be talking about how visual art-making has played and continues to play an integral and defining role in her life—both academic and in its manifestation of contributing to the society through art-making for different socio-cultural settings.

ABOUT THE TALK - “What Being Lost Helps you Find”

Cities are full of stories. Every nook and corner, every back alley, all the grand buildings and the roadside murals by local artists- they’re full of stories from the community, of the people who live there, and their everyday cumulative lives over time. For immigrants, this is further multiplied. There are stories of the home that was given to us at birth, and a later pursuit of finding home in a completely new setting. We spend decades being lost, navigating through stories of identity, history, and relationships.

Hemu's talk is about unearthing those stories for herself, and the ‘being lost’ she faced before finding what it is that she's been looking for. In the words of Hemalatha, "Being lost isn’t a bad thing for me for it helps me find something I might have otherwise not found. I travel through cities and engage in deep research and art of the space, and listen hard for the stories stuck in brick and mortar. I look for beads of culture mixed in with the wall colours and paint a story for everyone else to come later. I do this until I learn the city, until it becomes familiar, until it becomes home, until I am not lost anymore– until the next journey."

About the topic: Lost

When you’re wading through the unknown, it can feel scary and risky. You float around wondering if you’re going in the right direction and want to know what’s next.

Being lost is a collaboration between possibility and uncertainty. It’s an excuse to get one step closer to a more fulfilling life. What you were comfortable with may not be there anymore, but you will have the remarkable opportunity to reconnect with yourself and embrace discovery. In these “in-between” moments, turn to your inner beacon and pay close attention to where it’s guiding you.

Your beacon is the light that blazes within you, a signal made up of your values, dreams, and priorities. The essayist Anaïs Nin put it best when she wrote: “The unknown was my compass. The unknown was my encyclopedia. The unnamed was my science and progress.” Shine your light. Ask for help and let go of the idea that you have to make a perfect choice. You may feel lost, but you are not alone.

Our Milwaukee chapter chose this month’s exploration of Lost and Melissa Lee Johnson illustrated the theme. When you’re wading through the unknown, it can feel scary and risky. You float around wondering if you’re going in the right direction and want to know what’s next.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER - Hemalatha Venkatraman

Hemalatha Venkataraman (Hemu) is a transplant from the coastal city of Madras (South India) currently living in Columbus, Ohio.

With a lifelong passion and immersion in art, a background in architecture, and a Masters of Fine Arts in Design Research and Development, she thinks of herself as an observer, social commentator, and storyteller at the intersection of her different faculties.

Her art has a distinct sense of space (both physical and metaphorical) and the tangible to make sense of the intangible. Also a local poet, Hemu frequently brings all these different worlds together into one cohesive story with her writing.

This series explores my navigation through the American landscape as a brown immigrant woman, particularly now as I transition between phases of my life, a massive transformation brewing. Titled ‘For Here or To Go’, the artwork in this setting at the S.Dot gallery represents the uncertainties of my life right now, having to sometimes revise the ways I exhibit my cultural identity, and everyday micro-aggressions.I am still learning to navigate through this space— constantly at war in assimilating with this culture while also significantly staying with my cultural stance and identity.

The materials and art techniques chosen are outside my comfort zone with the rampant use of layers, mixed media, and portraiture that I don’t usually indulge in.

Wrecka Playa- Album Art in 20 Years (Curated Group Art Show)

What will Kanye West be putting out in 20 years? What will Beyonce’s track list consist of after her three kids go to college? What will the cover for Adele’s “49” look like? What if Prince hadn’t died and had another 20 years of albums to show for it? Wrecka Playa investigates not only what kind of art would go with the music of 20 years from now, but what statements such music – and its album art – might make on the society of 2037. Wrecka Playa is a visual art exhibit featuring album cover art as realized by visual and literary artists for music 20 years in the future. Album covers, liner notes, track lists, music reviews, posters...it's all coming out of the crates and onto the walls.

Brewing Home | The Art of Hemalatha Venkataraman (Debut Solo Art Show)

The debut art exhibition of the work of Hemalatha Venkataraman, "Brewing Home" is an investigation of what it takes to make a home in a foreign land, as well as an interrogation of the spaces within the lands we thought we knew. Hailing from Madras, India and navigating the many paths that Columbus has to offer as a rapidly developing city struggling with culture canon, Hemalatha strikes at the question of what makes a city a city and the people who inhabit it through hours of on-site plein air work and in a variety of mediums.

Highlighting stunning architectural renderings of various institutions alongside dozens of miniature pieces, Brewing Home is both a warm and hopeful study of the world we all access, as well as a journey into the interior and personal world every transplant carries with them.

Some original work and prints will be for sale.
A presentation by Streetlight Guild.

Buildings Reborn | Municipal Light Plant | Columbus Landmarks Foundation

Columbus Landmarks invites you to an exciting evening at the 1903 Municipal Light Plant as it undergoes a massive transformation and rebirth!

Saved from Most Endangered Building status, the city's coal-fired power plant is being transformed into an extraordinary commercial space where Garth's Auctioneer & Appraisers and other tenants will hang their shingles next year. Fifty-foot ceilings, a giant coal hopper, crane hooks, steel beams, brick walls, clerestory windows, and a 206-foot iconic smokestack are being retained to create a much desired, authentic industrial-style space.

Join us for this special preview event where you will be the first to experience the new energy of the raw historic interior with music from Arnett Howard & Friends, a live auction by Garth’s, an on-site art performance (live-drawing) by Hemu Venkataraman, construction tours, a satisfying summer spread featuring local craft beer, wine & food, and recognition of the people involved in this remarkable rehabilitation. This project is utilizing Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credits … let’s celebrate!
